Background of the Study
The phonological loop is a core component of working memory that enables temporary storage and manipulation of verbal information. In Yoruba language learners, this capacity is critical for tasks such as reading, vocabulary acquisition, and language comprehension. Recent cognitive research suggests that differences in phonological loop capacity can influence language learning efficiency and academic performance (Adeyemi, 2023). This study investigates how Yoruba language learners perform on cognitive tasks designed to measure the phonological loop. By employing tasks such as digit span, nonword repetition, and rhyme judgment tests, the research aims to capture the capacity and efficiency of the phonological loop in these learners. The study considers factors such as age, educational background, and exposure to formal instruction in Yoruba. It also explores whether enhanced phonological loop capacity correlates with better linguistic outcomes. Understanding these relationships could inform instructional strategies that strengthen working memory components, ultimately improving language proficiency. Moreover, identifying specific deficits may lead to targeted interventions that support learners who struggle with phonological processing. Findings from this research will contribute to both theoretical models of working memory and practical applications in language pedagogy, particularly in multilingual contexts where Yoruba is used alongside other languages (Balogun, 2024; Musa, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the established role of the phonological loop in language learning, there is a paucity of research examining its capacity specifically in Yoruba language learners. Most existing studies focus on Indo-European languages, potentially overlooking linguistic factors unique to Yoruba, such as tonal variations and specific phonemic inventories. This gap hampers the development of effective educational interventions tailored to Yoruba learners. Without a clear understanding of phonological loop capacity in this context, educators may struggle to implement strategies that optimize working memory usage, ultimately affecting language acquisition and literacy outcomes (Adeyemi, 2023; Musa, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To measure phonological loop capacity in Yoruba language learners using standardized cognitive tasks.
2. To examine the relationship between phonological loop performance and language proficiency.
3. To identify potential interventions to enhance working memory in Yoruba learners.
Research Questions:
1. What is the phonological loop capacity among Yoruba language learners?
2. How does phonological loop capacity correlate with language proficiency?
3. What interventions can improve phonological processing in this population?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it provides insights into the working memory processes underlying Yoruba language acquisition. By quantifying phonological loop capacity, the research will inform targeted instructional strategies that enhance language learning outcomes. These findings will benefit educators and curriculum developers by providing evidence-based approaches to support learners with working memory deficits (Adeyemi, 2023; Balogun, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating phonological loop capacity in Yoruba language learners using cognitive tasks; it does not extend to other memory components or languages.
Definitions of Terms:
• Phonological Loop: A component of working memory involved in the temporary storage of verbal information.
• Cognitive Tasks: Standardized tests designed to measure cognitive functions.
• Yoruba Language Learners: Individuals acquiring the Yoruba language through formal or informal education.
